The Traditional Kerala Manor:Architecture of a South Indian Catuhsala HouseThis Work describes the feudal late medieval high-caste Kerala house. It lays particular emphasis upon the so-called `four-house’ mansion, called catuhsala in Sanskrit and nalukettu in Malayam, the vernacular of Kerala. This palatial kind of mansion is regarded as ritually `complete’ and, as such, appropriate ― according to local Sankrit treatise on architecture ―, to the feudal clergy, royalty and aristocracy. The work describes the architecture of thirty historic houses of this type, highlighting their relation to Sanskritic architectural theory and to brahminical codes of daily life and ritual. It concludes with an attempt to present an overview of the notion of the architectural and ritual space of these houses as a microcosm.Cet ouvrage décrit la maison kéralaise féodale de haute caste à l’époque du médiéval tardif. Il met particulièrement l’accent sur le type de bâtiment nommé manoir des « quatre-maisons », appelé catuhsala en sanskrit et nalukettu en malayalam, la langue vernaculaire du Kerala. Ce genre de « maison-palais » est considéré comme rituellement achevé, et est ainsi adapté au clergé féodal, à la royauté et à l’aristocratie, selon les traités sanskrits locaux sur l’architecture. L’auteur décrit l’architecture d’une trentaine de maisons historiques de ce genre, mettant en évidence leur rapport à la théorie architecturale sanskrite et aux codes brahmaniques de la vie quotidienne et du rituel. Il conclut en proposant un aperçu de la notion d’espace architectural et du rituel lié à ces demeures, envisagées comme microcosme.
